This is something I have never quite understood, by all means correct me if I am in fact wrong.
In the world people are sectioned off into little groups as it were, you get the popular one who steryotypicaly are the "jocks", you get the smart ones who get called the geeks and you get the "freaks" who are counted as unpopular, this is generalised maybe it is not quite like this however from experience and observation I can say that this is the general idea.
Now in the "freak" it is basically made of people whom tend (not always) listen to rock music from Emo, Industrial, Metal ect, the dress sense also stands out of the crowd.
So it would seem Alternatives are the minority of the population, so with this being the case why do we attack verbally others from out group? When it is our group as a whole to which gets alot of abuse due to the lack of understaning and willing to understand that a large amount of the population have. Instead of sticking up and defending each other we simply stand watching, waiting for it to be our turn of recieving the abuse, does that strike anyone else as odd?
By standing and watching each other get "bullied" as it were we are as bad as the narrow minded causing it.
How is that right? |

Well, I guess I'm wrong, then.
I don't let myself become confined by stereotypes.
I wear whatever I feel like wearing on that particular day.
Usually depends on the weather, which is always balls hot here.
So dressing like a goth or "freak" is not only silly but stupid.

No, you're wrong.
It isn't a claim, but the truth.
You can troll elsewhere, if you like.
I pointed out exactly why dressing in all black with heavy clothing is stupid.
Hot weather.
Not practical.
And, as I said, I find trying to assert your identity through dressing "weirdly" to be a juvenile thing.
It isn't an opinion, it is pretty much accepted fact in developmental psychology.
That is why teens do that.
And I'm fairly certain that is why adults who continue to do it do as well.
Because they've still not come to grips with who they are in society.

Okay, stupid to who? Just because someone wants to keep their image up, even at a cost, they're labeled stupid? How many women have you known? I've met plenty of women who wear high heeled shoes, regardless of how far they're going to have to walk. The costs are different, but they share the same underlying principle.
Besides, what's wrong with them trying to change society's outlook on "goth" clothes (or whatever other style)? It's not wrong; it's just different. Society strictly frowned on piercings and tattoos not too long ago. Today, they're not fully accepted, but the criticism revolving around them has diminished.
Also, I don't believe anything in developmental psychology is accepted fact. Humans are too fickle to pin down anything regarding their development, with the possible exception of physical changes.

Despite what your mother or elementary school teachers told you, you are not a snowflake. Sure you're not a carbon copy of the person standing next to you, but within societies, there are definite patterns of development.
Developmental psychology (or psychology as a whole if you wanna go that way) isn't a hard science like biology or chemistry, but that doesn't really mean there aren't facts.

I'm not a snowflake!? WTF
There are too many outlying factors involving development for any of it to be considered fact. It's like saying "That tree's real! Except on Tuesdays when it rains. Oh, and when a rock hits it. Then it's not real." Of course, for the majority of the time, it's real. Lmao.

I'm not too sure I follow the analogy. I think you're confusing the word "fact" with "universal truth". Nothing in social sciences is always 100% true, because as you say people are different and there are a lot of factors that go into it. But there are patterns. Just because some teenagers don't dress differently doesn't change the fact that some of them do dress "weird" as a way of acting out or whatever you want to call it.

You don't follow it...?
Fact = a part of reality. It's not a fact if there are exceptions.
There are patterns to everything. A pattern isn't a fact, just so you know.
Lol! Your problem is the foundation on how you're judging. Just because you think a way of dressing is "weird" doesn't mean that it's the case. If you're following the "majority is right" idea, then you must not be a fan of liberal movements. At some point, many of our beliefs today were considered "weird," to put it nicely.
