Racism, Bigotry, Intolerance, and Jade Goody- loud mouthed whore
January 24, 2007, 12:25PM

by: Hooks_in_You

This article is about racism, bigotry, and intolerance in general. This article is written not because i'm an expert on the subject of racism or intolerance (I’m not), but simply because the things that I’m going to say NEED to be said, and it doesn’t look like anyone else is going to say them.

There has been an awful lot of media attention and coverage dedicated to the subject of racism, more specifically, what some loud-mouthed whore on a stupid fucking reality TV show said about another person on the same show.

Before I begin I would like to point out, and stress, that I am not a racist. The concept that one person is superior to another person on the basis of skin colour/race, is completely ludicrous to me. However, having said that, I freely admit to being a bigot (in my own way), as well as intolerant (in my own way), which is a subject I shall address later on in the article.

Your ancestors were racists. Really. Not even all that far back either. Less than 60 years ago there was a television show that made numerous racist jokes very casually "Till death us do part", and the company "Robertson’s" that made marmalade featured a "Golliwog" which were buttons featuring black people in various humorous but rather offensive situations. It was all very silly within those contexts, a bit of humour, a laugh. Of course both are now gone, and would no longer be acceptable because of their offensive connotations, and were you to argue that they are better gone because their presence, while not overtly harmful in and of themselves, drew attention to the differences between various races, and mocked one specific race, I would not argue otherwise.

Now on to the main point, the loud-mouthed whore. First things first, who the fuck cares what Jade Goody thinks. Is she your role model? Did you aspire to be just like her before she said what she said? Does she embody all those virtues that you wish were in you? I didn’t fucking think so.

Secondly, we will begin with a supposition. Let us suppose that Jade said the single most racist thing that anyone could possibly ever say to another person. There is a reason that I use such a supposition. First of all, since it is a matter of principle rather than specific circumstance, and instance, the argument remains valid right up to the upper reaches of possibility. Also, since I only have second hand reports of what was said, my research is wonky, but seeing as how we're assuming that what she said couldn’t possibly be as offensive as our case example (the utmost limits of intolerance) then the actual specifics of what was said are totally irrelevant.

Anyway, once again, assuming that what was said was the single most offensive racist remark that a person could physically make to another you must ask yourself this question. So what? Stop overreacting, ill explain, if you allow me more time. Intolerance of intolerance is worse than the intolerance itself because of the colossal degree of hypocrisy involved. Don’t you get it? If you refuse to tolerate someone on the basis of their intolerance of another person (for whatever reason that intolerance existed), you (on the basis of unacceptability) supersede their own offensiveness because you are epitomising the very characteristic or trait that you are criticising, adding hypocrisy alongside intolerance.

Contrary to what Gordon Brown will tell you, intolerance of intolerance is not a virtue, it is a double standard. Opinions are (particularly verbalised ones), astoundingly superficial characteristics. They show through in behaviours, attitudes and inflections and implications, but are nevertheless completely superficial, as they are on display for the rest of the world to see. They are comparable to skin colour and race in the sense that a prejudice against an opinion (particularly in the vocalisation of such) is in essence an objection to how that person is perceived or chooses to be perceived by their surroundings (in the instance of choice prejudice is comparable to homophobia) and as such is a complaint against their appearance much like racism.

There is also the freedom issue involved with this double standard, but before we get to that I would like to diversify (pun unintended) the subject just a little bit and expand it (since we bring up the concept of prejudices against opinion) and move onto the topic of bigotry.

I live in Northern Ireland, a place where bigotry is not only rife, but is quite literally, a way of life for an awful lot of people. Religious bigotry is an inaccurate word to portray the various persecutions endured on either side because although the matter is between Catholics and Protestants (or more specifically nationalists and loyalists) it is not an issue of religious differences in doctrine or canon, but is instead a turf war between rival gangs. Most loyalists could not tell you the beliefs of Roman Catholicism, and even more damning is that they couldn’t even tell you the beliefs of Protestantism, but they continue to fight because of pride, greed, and ultimately brainwashing. Personally, I agree with neither side, and in fact abhor the beliefs of either religion, and in actuality ALL religions, but that is neither here nor there.

The principles of bigotry are similar to racism, though slightly elevated, since a person could actually have valid reasons to harbour hatred against a particular religion. I shall choose myself as this example, in a manner of speaking. I hate Christians. My hatred towards them is not based upon rational thinking or reason, and is completely and utterly without merit; however, that still does not change my extreme irrational hatred towards them. When you hate a person for unreasonable reasons, you automatically seek out excuses to justify and validate your beliefs. Christians brainwash people (this is not a subject for argument- they DO), they start wars that kill people without necessity (also not for argument- Both George Bush and Tony Blair claimed God told them to go to war in Iraq) and they stand in the way of stem cell research and cloning (researches that could save millions of people every year). Not that I am adverse to any of these things (personally to me these are the upsides of Christianity) but they do make wonderful excuses, and they remain for the most part perfectly valid reasons to object to the religions existence.

However, the subject (like every subject I raise) is one of freedom. Who are you to tell someone what they are permitted to think and say? Do you truly believe that you are void of intolerance (in any of its innumerable forms)? Everyone hates and loves people for reasons that are essentially arbitrary and aesthetic, superficial. Think about it. WLTM good-looking, well mannered, GSOH man with dog. Sound familiar. Every characteristic mentioned is completely superficial and reflects a person in no way shape or form. A serial killer could be a good looking well mannered charming individual with a good sense of humour. Take Ted Bundy for instance.

Most people are adverse to labelling and judgement when it is them being labelled or judged. Let me put it to you this way, if you seen a gang (oops!) of youths hanging around outside your house would you assume that their intentions were malevolent or benign? Don’t you fuckin lie! Everyone casts judgement upon everyone else, and everyone divides people up into separate labels, it’s inevitable, and realistically, it is practical. Without psychologically separating and dividing people into categories, groups, labels, it would take an inordinate amount of time to mention anything about anyone; discussions would be unnecessarily long winded, without benefit or virtue.

Finally, a sub point, not specifically about racism but about reality television itself. Racism, hate, fear, bigotry and all other negative aspects and concepts are all aspects of reality. If you want rid of those aspects, then you must scrap the whole concept of reality television, otherwise it ceases to be real, it’s not the world as it is, but how you would like it to be. All sides should be represented, even if you find them morally reprehensible.

Finally, I shall leave you with this note. Here is an observation that validates my point. When Jade Goody was evicted from the house, there was no-one outside. When you divide people into the two categories of racist and non-racist, which side do you think they were worried was going to carry things too far? I thought as much. The only way that racism could ever disappear completely would be through the implementation of a regime similar to the one that Big Brother is derived from (1984), and that solves nothing. It should not be the race aspect of racism that bothers you but rather the hate and fear that it substantiates. Please point out the hypocrisy of my criticism of criticism, and also, spelling and grammar, because that stuff matters oh so much to you fools. We’re all intolerant, we’re all hypocritical, and we all deserve to die just as much as one another so please do me a favour and remember that always.

I’ll finish with a quote from the popular movie “Full Metal Jacket”

“There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless.” Wise words.

Previews Abound
January 23, 2007, 9:53PM

by: eon

By popular demand, a number of different 'Preview' buttons have been added to various sections of the site, including profile comments, forums, groups, and parts of the control panel.

Forums and Groups:

New posts as well as replies now offer a preview option. Clicking the 'Preview' button will allow you to review your post and make changes before finally submitting it.

Profile Comments:

Same as above when leaving someone a comment on their profile. If you like to write long comments or tend to use a lot of HTML, this could be handy.

Control Panel:

You'll find preview buttons on both the Look and Feel section as well as the Edit Profile section. Make any changes you'd like in either of those areas and click 'Preview Changes'. You'll get a chance to see what your profile will look like before you make any actual changes. If you like what you see, just click your back button and then click 'Save Changes'.

This will be useful for those of you who do lots of work on your profile layout and add lots of complex HTML into the sections of your profile. This way you can take a look and make sure something isn't messed up before you finalize.

That about covers it.

As always, I hope you all find the new features of good use.

Save Yourself.
January 21, 2007, 10:33AM

by: Ektomorf

I recently spent some time with my little cousin, Mona, and her parents. She had heard about the recent kidnapping-murders of girls. It bothered her, and she said she wanted to talk about it. The talk was particularly interesting because I knew that her parents had done an excellent job teaching her about strangers and safety.

"Why did she go with him?" she asked me. We were talking about a 6 year old girl in Florida who had been kidnapped and killed.

"The bad guys always try to take you by surprise," I said. "They never play fair. They're always ready. She was surprised, then scared; she's not sure what is going on, and she freezes."

"Wow. So what do you do?" she asked.

"Don't worry about being polite," I told her.

"Tear down the house. Fight. Scream. Kick. Bite. Break stuff. If you slow the guy down even a little bit, that time could make a lot of difference. He might flee. Someone might come to see what's going on. A surveillance camera might get a good shot of his face. Do anything you can do, to avoid going with him. If it's a misunderstanding, you can apologize later. And any grownup will understand."

"Yeah, 'cause if you go with him, you could die…" she observed.

"Exactly," I said. "So do anything you have to. Kick or bite. If there are windows nearby, try to break one. It'll make noise, maybe set off an alarm."

She laughed and pointed at me!

"You can't do that! Those are prob'ly really expensive! You'd get in trouble!"

So. You think you've talked to your little ones about safety? This girl had better training than most, but she still didn't understand that she could bend the rules in these situations.

"I'm glad you said that," I told her. "It tells me you don't get it yet. In a situation like that, where you think you are in danger, listen to me now – EVERY RULE IS BROKEN. Got it? Every rule is cancelled."

"What do you mean?"

"Okay. Like breaking the glass? Nobody would get mad at you. The store owner, the police, your parents – nobody!
The insurance company would pay for it. Your parents would be happy to pay for it. Everyone would tell you that you were smart and did exactly the right thing, because you stopped the bad guy from taking you. Nothing else matters – Nothing.
A broken window is nothing if it saves your life. Every rule is broken. You just have to save yourself."

"Every rule?" she asked skeptically.

"Every rule. The rule about breaking things? Cancelled.
The rule about being polite to grownups? Cancelled.
The rule about using 'Inside Voices'? Cancelled.
The rule about using bad words? Cancelled.
The rule about biting? Cancelled.

You do anything, ANYTHING to be safe. And everyone will tell you that you did the right thing."

She thought for a minute. "I heard about when the bad guy wants you to help find his dog and stuff," she suggested.

"Yeah. Do you know what to do then?"

"Don't go with him," she replied.

"Right. That's not how grownups find lost dogs anyway. I bet you didn't know that?"

"No."

"If you're worried about being rude, or not sure if you believe him, what do you do?"

She thought hard. "I don't know," she said finally.

"You say, 'I'll go get my mom,' and you run away."

"Or just run away without saying anything," she suggested.

"Yeah, that's even better," I said. "There is no problem that an adult needs a kid's help for. Your mom and dad need to know about this."

"And he's prob'ly a liar," she added.

"And he's probably lying," I nodded and kissed her forehead. "The main thing to remember is that every rule is cancelled. If you have to shove a pen through the guy's eye, that's okay, because the rule about hurting other people is erased. If you have to cause a traffic accident, that's okay, because the rules about driving are cancelled. And if you get hurt in the accident, you hurt him too. If you have to pull the fire alarm at school, that's okay because those rules are cancelled too. See? The only thing that matters is for you to get away and be safe."

She considered this, then nodded. "Cool," she said.

I looked at her. "You think you understand this a bit better now?"

She nodded.

Take a minute...
January 21, 2007, 8:11AM

by: equinevampyre

Will you all just shut up for one lousy minute? I used to sit down and read through all of the articles, back when they were actually worth reading. Now all that gets through is some ignorant kid ranting because they have nothing better to do.

The world is not going to stop stereotyping, so please just get used to it. It’s been happening all of your little lives and you are still griping about it? Come on folks.

Death happens. We cannot prevent it, we should not just run out in the streets and just start causing it. Why not let it happen when it’s supposed to happen? I’m not saying that I believe in destiny or whatnot, but it will happen eventually. Let it happen and enjoy your life while you still have one.

The whole emo thing is very annoying. You are not emo. They are not emo. Get over it and stop acting like some whiny little grunt because you can’t manage to find yourself something happy in life.

Life isn’t just about being depressed and crying in a corner. Find yourself something to believe in, if you need it. Find some sort of hobby or whatnot if you have nothing better to do. And most of all, why life your life in complete and utter sorrow if you could be happy? It’s not just going to fall into your lap, you actually have to work for it.

All of you little kids who know nothing about government should just stop trying to rip apart the government that is set in place. I can’t say much for other countries, as I haven’t specifically spent time learning about their systems of government, but our system in America has its flaws, we know this. But you know what, it’s what we have. It’s not going to radically change because a bunch of kids want to have some sort of anarchy which would never happen. There honestly would be no true anarchy because inevitably, someone would take charge. There would be groups of people with some sort of leader. Get over it and deal with what we have.

People, please learn to spell. I doubt that any of you are below the fifth grade where spelling errors are expected. It’s not hard to use the English language. Honestly, it really isn’t. And what is with this infusion of using the letter ‘z’ to spell words that usually have an ‘s’? I won’t say that I’m amazing by any means in this category, because a few mistakes here and there are a given, but at least try to sound somewhat intelligent. I’ve read articles on here where people could actually know what they’re talking about, but their horrid word and spelling choices just push me away. It’s called spell check folks. It’s not a hard feature to use. Just click a few buttons and there you go, the computer does the work for you.

When you are going to post an article on something with needed facts behind it, please do your research. When you write an article, it should be well thought out and have all of the support you can find behind it. It only makes sense to cover all bases rather than incite a battle in the comments over the article. You look pretty ignorant when you forget entire chunks of information in something that was supposed to be a good article.

All of these articles on losing our freedoms in America are quite hilarious, to say the least. We, out of most countries, have the most freedoms. We have, for the most part, a government that does its job (again, not saying that there aren’t flaws) and we are still complaining. Look around you. Think of all of the things that you find yourself doing every day. School, as big of a pain as many American youths believe it is, is a privilege in itself. We take so many things for granted over here, or for that matter anywhere. I’m not trying to be some big rights activist for other countries here, but honestly sit back and look at what you have. Even if you are in the poorest of categories in America, you have a vast wealth compared to many in other areas of the world.

Why on earth would you guys start your articles saying that there are spelling mistakes, saying that the article itself is trivial and pointless? Aren’t you trying to get people to actually read what you have to say? Claiming those things in the beginning is just going to make people avoid reading your article. Just think about that.

Lastly, when you are thinking of submitting an article, please take a look through the archives and see that you aren’t posting something that hasn’t been said a million times. A lot of the things in this article were picked up from comments made by others, not necessarily articles themselves, though there have been some, such as the recent article on bad writing and how to fix it.

Someone might take this into consideration and for that matter, perhaps no one will. It doesn’t matter. At least I tried to help.

I wanted to thank all of those people who read the articles, even if they are dumb sometimes. It’s good to read comments that are written well and have some meaning to them.

News from Melbourne, Aust.
January 18, 2007, 11:59AM

by: TheAntichrist

I'm in Melbourne and this week we had a black-out that was inclusive of most of the city. The blame was placed on the bush fires that are tearing up the north east of Victoria and some of New South Wales... However since then we haven't SEEN any photos or ANY evidence for that matter to suggest this theory is true; all we have is the word of the power company, the media, and the government to say this was in fact the case. When it happened I straight away wanted to know the DETAILS... that is; what, where, when, how and show me! Trust me you'd feel the same way leaving your 'dead' house on a 41.5 degree day to find someone who was able to offer some cooked food or even some food that has survived almost zero refrigeration since the power went out. Grrrrrrrrr.

...Anyway, I suspect it may simply have been the power company not being able to maintain the million air conditioners and the 2milion television sets all tuned in to the Australian Open at the given time. Instead of taking the blame however and paying out the insurance companies for the incapability to maintain sufficient power in a reasonable small city (in comparison to an Asian or US city) which resulted in bars, restaurants, seafood suppliers, supermarkets and ice cream stores losing masses of stock, they decided yo opt for force majour - a loop-hole allowing companies to blame GOD for the immense wastage... with drought already the number 1 issue in our area right now, 'wastage' is not looked upon very kindly by the population... especially while we're not allowed to wash our cars or even water our lawns with a hose at certain times of the day.

I must also include that the Premier of Victoria Mr Steve Bracks shortened his vacation (Bless him) to tell the people of Victoria to lessen their power for the next 3 days. If it was bushfires or ash or smoke from the bushfires and it is now fixed - as it seems to be - couldn't we go back to regular usage?? I mean it is 40 degrees! No water and no Power??? What the fuck are we conserving for!? ...a rainy day???? =P. I'm still angry.

I realise I'm in Melbourne and the awareness from you guys is not what I'd like, but I just thought I'd share this as an example of people not being able to access the information necessary to make accurate assessments on what the government and the large corps are doing.

I think this is hugely important for us as younger citizens. As Generation ‘Why?’ let’s keep asking…

Thanks - Adamance ...Ur friendly neighbourhood Antichrist

The placebo effect and the afterlife
January 11, 2007, 10:51PM

by: eyesofdread

DISCLAIMER : The following article contains a theory which may contradict peoples belief systems, however, please note that I am not stating the beliefs on the afterlife as fact I am suggesting them as one possible theory. It was not my intent to offend anyone. If you are deeply religious and get offended easily, then, nothing personal against you, however I do think it would be ill-advised for you to read any further.

There are many theories and beliefs surrounding the concept of life after death. Most beliefs (surrounding the question of what becomes of a person once they die) stem from either religious or spiritual concepts and/or theories that are deeply rooted within a persons mind.

One concept that I have not seen explored is the possibility of a link between the placebo effect and the afterlife, and it is this concept that I wish to explore further in this article.

What is the “placebo effect”?

To fully comprehend any possible link, we must first establish a definition of "The Placebo Effect". I have done extensive research on the topic, and I feel that the best definition by far comes from the website http://skepdic.com/placebo.html where it states:

"The placebo effect is the measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health not attributable to treatment. This effect is believed by many people to be due to the placebo itself in some mysterious way. A placebo (Latin for "I shall please") is a medication or treatment believed by the administrator of the treatment to be inert or innocuous. Placebos may be sugar pills or starch pills. Even "fake" surgery and "fake" psychotherapy are considered placebos. "

Why do placebo’s work?

There are many different opinions as to why placebo’s work. I believe that the most valid one (and the one upon which this article is based) is that placebo’s work because the “patient” believes that they will. The placebo effect is quite possibly the greatest example of “Mind over Matter” contemporary life has to offer.

What are some examples of the placebo effect?

While most research on placebos will reveal medical case studies it is important to note that many examples can be found in popular culture.

There are numerous stories of teenagers supposedly getting drunk after consuming non-alcoholic beer. Even the movie Eurotrip features two of its characters getting high after they eat what they believed to be “hash brownies”, however they immediately “sober up” once it is revealed that there were no drugs held within the brownies what-so-ever.

We often respond to cases of the placebo effect with humour, however, if we were to look beyond the slightly comical side to the phenomena then we may start to see the multiple ways placebos may be impacting upon our lives without us ever being aware.

What are the possible links between the placebo effect and the afterlife?
Put simply, it is my belief that if the human mind is able to create unexplainable realities for itself during life even when the individual is considered perfectly sane then surely there is a possibility that the human mind is also able to create realities for itself in death.

Take the case of the teenagers getting drunk of the non-alcoholic beer. They feel intoxicated because of their belief that the beer is, in fact, alcoholic. This belief must have established itself in a remarkable short amount of time (certainly, less than an hour), however the teenagers have an extreme reaction to it…..to the extent where, in some cases, they may pass out or show signs of needing to be hospitalized.

If the mind can create this reaction based largely on a belief that is (at most) only a couple of hours old, imagine what our minds would be able to create when working off a belief that is perhaps months, years or even decades old. What if the belief was formed over a lifetime?

If we view Jesus Christ as a historical figure, and not as the son of God, we can see that at the time of his death, Jesus was completely convinced that he would return from the grave. Although there is no scientific or medical reason why this should happen according to all documentation this belief was proven to be accurate. If people are permitted to give God (of whom there is no solid evidence of existence) full credit then surely I may put forth the theory that it is the placebo effect (of which we have extensive evidence to justify its existence) that truly caused this amazing feat.

What of the priests and monks that dedicate much of their lives to their gods and, thus, their entire belief system, what of the family members who deal with a relatives death by believing that they will be reunited in their own passing, what of the scientologists who have heated arguments to try and prove that after death there is nothing….what of every single belief as to the afterlife. Who are we as mere mortals to declare that only one belief is correct?

If my theory holds true, then each individual’s personal belief is true for that individual.

Does this mean that we can choose what happens to us when we die

This would mean that on a subconscious level we all choose what becomes of us when we die; however, I sincerely doubt that it would be possible for people consciously choose what happens to them in the afterlife.

In order for the placebo effect to truly take place there cannot be any room of doubt left in ones mind. To hope or wish that a particular event occurs does not mean that we believe that a particular event (or series of events) is actually going to occur.

I am not ruling out the possibility of the ability to consciously choose our own afterlife, however, I do think that it would be extremely difficult to consciously convince yourself that you believe something to the extent where, as far as you’re concerned, there is no room left for doubt.

Our minds made much of the environment that we live in (architecture, technology, medicine…etc) possible and based on the above evidence I believe that there is a possibility that our minds may also create an environment for us to enter after death.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE: this article contains the main arguments for possible links between the placebo effect and the afterlife, I am aware that there are a number of questions that arise from this, and I am trying to properly research the answers to some of these questions. Once I believe that I have sound enough knowledge to put forth further information on this topic I shall do so.
death
January 8, 2007, 2:10PM
by: brokn_within_secrets
Do you ever sit down and just wonder what it would be like to feel the liquid red fluid resting on your shaking hands? My deranged mind tells me it would bring me a sensationally strange enjoyment. There’s times when I can sit and see that people are harming others and I think of how they should suffer
In a movie created in 1999 these two Irish brothers kill evil and are completely against the shedding of innocent blood. They state that there are degrees of evil and that there are different values that should be lived by. They say “Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.”
This is a movie that I cherish and would live by if I honestly knew I could. If you could commit the perfect murder and know that you would not be caught for doing so, would you? And would it depend on who you are or what your mind set is?
If you answer not o that seriously think about it and take a few moments to consider it. Through out your life you may have been treated differently, been beaten on occasion, or have “mental” issues. At one point in your life you will have the urge to just put your hands around someone’s neck and choke the life out of them until you physically hear the gasp of their last breathe escaping from their body. Okay there’s a good possibility that I just put way to much thought into death but that’s just like me.
In my opinion everyone dies eventually so why can’t people experience the act of murder? Especially onto those who have been evil? Not all evil men or women suffer for what they do. So if at least one person in each city is there to remind not to commit an act against fellow man then maybe the world would be a less dangerous place to live.
And yes I realize that technically that if I would ever kill it would be an evil doing on my part, and when it would be my time, the glory of death would approach and I’d gladly have my moment of self sacrifice. I say sacrifice simply because I know ill get what I deserve and I will not fight for my own life to be spared.
But I know that committing such a heinous crime can not go undiscovered because no one has ever been able to not be caught, that is except for the special serial killers who only a true deranged can admire for their beautiful work. But even some of the greatest serial killers haven’t even been able to go unnoticed, so why should I be any different?
Many people see death as an experience given to you by god but does god really have much to do with it? I mean if you just happened to get murdered is it because god wanted you in his domain? In my opinion that would make our loving and caring god just as deranged as me, some one who honestly would enjoy being the grim reaper. See taking others life would be a bundle of joy for me. And if god did it who’s to say it isn’t just for his insanity laughter? God is just as evil as the next guy. Yeah he created our world and sure he gave us life. But he gave us a world of hate and he gave us life to die.
Yeah life is beautiful and our savior wasn’t wrong in creating life. It was sheer brilliance on his part. As far as death goes though what is there to gain? You die and others suffer from your “disappearance”. You may have been helped but others must weep in misery at the loss of a loved one. So you can slave away and walk through the “golden gates” all you wish but when your reaper stands in front of you, your going to be scared for yourself and your family. They say if you’re a good Christian you have nothing to fear. If you’ve led a good life you won’t have to worry about life after death. I think that adds pressure and I think Christians worry more then non-believers do.
I may not be speaking in terms for every one. I know when I did enter the life as a Christian life was harder for me. I always considered every little thing I did as wrong and worried about which god I was pleasing. It is surprisingly more temptation added onto your life.
Well this little rant of mine has wondered off topic and is no longer the discussion it was meant to be. The discussion of slicing someone’s body into pieces until it’s no longer considered a corpse is done. And I very dearly hope you enjoyed every last splendid thing I have said.
We've all been conceived as sexual beings. It is as much a part of our anatomy, our mental make-up as breathing. Whether we are acting upon our sexual drive at any given moment is beside the point. I think it’s important to realize that children have sexual feelings, just not as developed as adult feelings. Whether these instincts remain healthy is quite another story. Putting myself in the shoes of some parents, I believe we need to instill a healthy outlook in our kids about sex and their imminent sexuality.
The first inkling we have of our little ones being sexual is their first attempts at masturbation. This could take any form you can imagine but most parents notice our babies discover their genitals at about 10 months of age and maybe younger.
Eureka! A new toy! Hopefully, we won’t freak out about it. It is, after all, their toy.
This is their body and it is their innocent need to discover how the various parts function, feel and react. There have been countless studies and articles written about masturbation. Clearly, it is a healthy form of sexual exploration and usually begins in early childhood.
Now that that has been said, let’s think about how we, as parents and caretakers, can deal with this sometimes-embarrassing issue.
Personally, it never bothered my mum when I began exploring myself. She’d gently point out that it wasn’t appropriate to do in front of most people and certainly not at the dinner table but other than that, the issue was never really an ... issue.
I have heard that other parents go through a variety of reactions to their baby’s or toddler’s wandering hands, from actually hitting a child for innocently touching their genitals to a mortified: “How could you?!”
Gee, how could they NOT? Come on ... they’re babies, they’re exploring the world and themselves. Where is the shame, guilt or horror in this? Only in parent’s and other adult minds, that’s where. How on earth would a baby or young toddler assume that touching a part of their being is bad, evil, shameful or humiliating unless their significant adult tells them so, whether in words, actions or obvious distress over the situation?
This brings us to the probable conclusion that our kids will grow into adults feeling ashamed, guilty and weird about their sexuality if we, as their predominant instructors of life, teach them to feel bad about their natural curiosity.
I certainly understand that some adults are just not comfortable with this parenting issue or, down the line, discussing sex in a logical and rational way with their questioning adolescents. A good plan would be to enlist the help and guidance of a trusted family member or the child’s pediatrician. Better yet, parents who feel uncomfortable should discuss this with their own doctor, trusted friend or family member and then have a back up plan to deal with the issue when it arises, which it most definitely will.
